Seminar open to the public on April 18th from 2PM-4PM at Greenwich Library

Darien, CT, April 1, 2009-Mackey & Guasco Staffing Associates LLC, Fairfield County’s leading employment agency, will host its first in a series of seminars to help job seekers land a job in this economic downturn. The event will be held from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM on Saturday, April 18th, at the Greenwich Library.

Attendees will have a chance to meet with the agency’s founders, Maureen Mackey and Luisa ‘Lu’ Guasco, who will evaluate résumés and share their knowledge that spans more than 20 years in the recruiting field. In addition, forty-five minutes will be set aside for those in attendance to network with other professionals.

Mackey and Guasco will talk about what today’s employers are REALLY looking for and what you have to do to “make the cut!”

“You will walk away with a new found attitude towards your job search,” said Mackey. “Believe it or not companies are hiring and it just takes a little more effort on your part to land that perfect job.”

The seminar will cover such helpful tips as:

-Don’t count on job boards. Some career advisors have referred to these sites as “résumé black holes.”
-Tap your network. Make sure you’re on the radar of people who have access to the kinds of jobs you need. Make sure you are using social networks such as Linked In.
-Promote your brand. Now is not the time to be shy. Establish yourself as an expert in your industry.

“Promoting your brand could be as simple as volunteering for a community project or blogging,” said Guasco. “You could also write a column for a trade journal or create a website. The idea is to build credibility.”

Presentation / Q& A: 2:00-3:15 PM
Networking and Refreshments (Optional): 3:15-4:00 PM

“Career Insurance”

Presented by: Gary Pezzuti – North, Central & West Jersey Chapters
We have Health Insurance, Life Insurance, House Insurance, Auto Insurance… maybe Dental, Mortgage and Disability Insurance. Career Insurance insures your insurances.
Most employees and job candidates listen to WII-FM throughout their entire career… and most employees never reach their potential.

Research shows, and recent history supports, that regardless of an employee's performance or ability, he/she will seek a new position every 4 to 5 years… sometimes within the same firm.
Too often, with a myopic perspective, MOST employees / candidates are never given serious consideration… not for lack of ability… but lack of understanding WHAT SPECIFICALLY the management is seeking.

Assuming they know what technical and managerial skills are required, the employee / candidate fires off a litany of outstanding qualifications and accomplishments… and wonders what went wrong???

"The “most qualified” employees are too often passed over for career opportunities…
… they talk too much… and about the wrong things."
Some of the topics to be addressed include:
Our “World of Ex-Change” - What Can You Offer The Firm
Employment: A Job… or A
Career
Being ‘… good at what you do…’ is not enough
Personal Evaluation
Networking
PIZZA
Supply Chain Career Planning in the 21St Century "

Who Should Attend:

Those who will sit for their annual review…
Candidates applying to ‘Internal Postings’…
Employees seeking promotions and / or management positions…
Managers / Staff who screen / qualify candidates or conduct interviews…
Anyone involved in training / instruction / education…
Managers performing employee reviews…
Students / Practioners seeking to chart a career path…
Those preparing reports / presentations to top management…
Anyone ‘thinking of updating their resume’ and / or ‘on the market’…

New job center to open in stamford

Laid off professionals in the financial services sector will soon have a new resource to tap into career help. The Workplace, a free resource for Connecticut job seekers sent the following announcement today.

Our Tri-State National Emergency Grant (NEG ) proposal has been approved. Connecticut, New York and New Jersey collaborated and focused this proposal on job loses in the financial activity sector of the workforce.

Most financial sector job loses have been in our region. We began working with our partners on this proposal back in October and it was formally submitted in early November. We have had greater job loses in this sector since then. This NEG is open ended so we can add job loses that occured after the filing and future ones without a new application process.

We will open a new job center in Stamford which will include an out placement facility to serve our professional customers. We will also link the new center to our Community esource Program which offers family support services that can help sustain families during long periods without work.

Our customer first approach continues. The WorkPlace should receive at least $ 2.2 million to serve the nearly 400 workers that were included in this proposal. My commendations to our new Congressman Jim Himes for helping to free up this proposal which was stalled in transition.

Workplace Transition and Adaption Townhall Meeting

State Rep Tony Hwang’s First Forum to Focus on Workplace Transition and Adaption

LOCATION: Sacred Heart University, William Pitt Center Board Rm

TIME: Feb. 7th – 1:00 pm - Panel Discussion

FAIRFIELD- On Saturday, February 7, State Rep. Tony Hwang, R-134, will hold his first ‘Town Meeting’ event for constituents in Fairfield and Trumbull at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The event, which will take place at the university’s Pitt Center Board Room, will feature several expert panelists discussing workplace transition and job skills.

The first hour of the town meeting will allow the panelists to discuss workplace transition and job skills and take questions from residents. The remainder will allow local elected officials and Rep. Hwang to conduct an open forum regarding local and state issues. Rep. Hwang, who was previously employed in the executive search industry, said the economy dictated the theme of the first town meeting he will host.

“The economy we’ve seen in the past year is much different from past downturns,” said Rep. Hwang. “The major change is that we’re seeing many successful people who’ve held mid-level and high-level jobs realize that other comparable positions in their industry simply aren’t there anymore. It’s my hope that bringing in professionals well-versed in workplace transition and job skills can help some of our neighbors who very much need to rejoin the workforce.”

Panelists will include:

Joseph Carbone, President and Chief Executive Officer of The WorkPlace, Inc. The organization helps people prepare for careers and strengthens the workforce for employers. As Southwestern Connecticut’s Regional Workforce Development Board, it administers workforce development funds and coordinates providers of job training and education programs to meet the needs of residents and employers in the Southwestern Connecticut Region.

Laurel Anderson, Regional Director of outreach and marketing of the United Way of Connecticut 211 in Region 1, which covers towns in all of Fairfield County, the Valley and the greater New Haven area. She currently serves on the boards of the Greater Bridgeport League of Women Voters and the Bridgeport Area Branch of the American Association of University Women. 2-1-1 is a free information and referral service available from any phone in Connecticut 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
